Solar Energy Systems
Solar energy systems are becoming a frequently used alternative
to electricity. Using the natural resource of the power of the sun is
becoming more widespread around the world. In small, remote villages
and in big cities, solar energy systems are popping up everywhere.
The advantages of solar energy systems far outweigh the disadvantages.
In remote areas where regular utility lines have not been set up, a
solar energy system can replace the electricity. This prevents the need
of having to run expensive utility lines out to these areas. In large
cities, where the electric grid gets overrun on certain days of the
year (such as during the summer with air conditioners), solar energy
systems will help alleviate the demand.
Electric companies are testing the advantages of using the Photovoltaic
system (PV) to supplement regular electricity. This system allows solar
energy to be converted directly into electricity. One of the advantages
of the PV solar energy system is that the conversion from sunlight is
direct so no extra large machinery, such as generators, are needed (unless
more electricity is required). There are no by-products and no water
needed for cooling as with older solar energy systems. So the impact
on the environment is negligible.
For developing countries, solar energy systems are becoming more practical
than standard electrical utilities. Many developing countries have remote
or rural villages that don’t have access to electricity and running
water. Lanterns and firelight are still the common sources of light
for these places. With solar energy systems developed, these small villages
would have enough electricity to pump water, run a refrigerator, lights,
and fans or a heater, which is often all these small towns need. When
the solar power runs out, these small villages can often use wind power
or backup generators.
Other uses for solar energy systems might be lights in a stadium, power
to pump water for irrigation on a farm, power small electronic gadgets,
or they can be used in businesses. Many businesses would benefit greatly
from the reduced utility bills and know that they are helping the environment
at the same time.
By using a little creative thinking and planning, people around the
world are coming up with newer and better ways of using solar energy
systems every day. As technology advances, so will the use of alternative
sources of energy. Becoming informed is the first step towards a better
environment.
